The honest version of this post is short: most idea validation tools in 2026 measure interest, and most founders treat interest as demand. That's the whole problem.

I've been surprised by how many founders have never thought through what a given tool is actually measuring when they use it. The category name covers a lot of ground and the tools don't advertise their limits.

What Validation Is Actually For

The question you're trying to answer before you build is not "is this a good idea." It's "will someone pay for this." Those questions sound similar. They are not. The first one has a hundred tools that will give you an answer. The second one is harder.

In 2026, founders have good tools for the early work. AI validators catch gaps in your framing before you've talked to anyone. The best ones are legitimately useful for this. If you've built on a wrong assumption, a good AI validator will find it. Qualitative surveys help you understand whether the problem is real and how much it costs the people who have it. Both of these belong in the process. Neither of them tells you whether anyone will pay.

A landing page with email capture is further along but still not at the money question. Someone giving you their email address after reading your pitch has decided the concept is interesting enough to want more. That tells you something about your message. The gap between "signed up for updates" and "gave a credit card" is where most waitlists die quietly. Conversion rates from waitlist to paying customer, for products that have published their real numbers, hover around 2 to 8 percent. The distribution is wide and the variation mostly comes down to whether the pre-launch process included an actual demand test.

The Only Test That Measures What You Think It Measures

A fake door test presents a real offer with a real purchase CTA. Someone sees a price and a buy button. The button resolves to a "not ready yet" page. What you're counting is how many people tried to pay, not how many people thought the concept was interesting.

This is closer to an actual launch than anything else you can do before building. The person who clicks a buy button has made a small financial decision in their head. That's different from the person who clicked "notify me." It's not the same as a real sale, but it's the same category of decision.

The Netdrift fake door test gave us 4.2% click rate on the purchase button. Two months of landing page signups had given us a number we felt good about. The fake door test gave us a number we could actually use. The numbers don't say the same thing. One confirms we had a message that worked. The other confirmed we had something people wanted to buy.

How to Think About Sequencing

The sequence that works: qualitative interviews to find out whether the problem is real, a landing page to find out whether the message lands, a fake door test to find out whether someone will pay. AI validators and surveys belong in the first step. They're good at it. The mistake is asking them to answer the third question.

What goes wrong is almost always the same thing: a founder uses first-step tools to answer a third-step question, gets a confident answer, and launches into a market that doesn't actually exist. The tools for demand testing are not complicated. The thing that's usually missing is the willingness to run a test where the answer might be no.
